Compound (COMP) is the governance token of Compound, a decentralized lending protocol on Ethereum (ERC-20) that lets users supply and borrow crypto assets through algorithmically-set liquidity pools. Bridged representations also exist on Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, BNB Smart Chain, Base, Harmony, and Energi, though the native asset is the Ethereum mainnet contract.
Compound Labs opened the protocol to the public on September 27, 2018.
Compound was among the first DeFi protocols to fully hand protocol control to token-holder governance, distinguishing it from centrally-administered lending platforms. COMP holders vote on which assets are supported, interest-rate models, and treasury use, tying token ownership directly to protocol direction.
In August 2026, the Compound Foundation secured a DAO-approved $52 million development budget to pivot toward institutional and real-world-asset credit infrastructure, positioning Compound against products such as Aave's Horizon and Morpho.
COMP is a governance token, not a utility token required to use Compound's lending markets. Holders use COMP to propose and vote on-chain for protocol changes such as adding or removing supported assets, adjusting interest-rate models and collateral factors, and directing treasury allocations.
Proposals are executed through on-chain Compound Governance, live since around June 2020, with any approved change subject to a 7-day timelock before taking effect.
Circulating and maximum supply are both fixed at 10,000,000 COMP, so net emission is capped rather than inflationary or disinflationary.
COMP was deployed on Ethereum on March 4, 2020, roughly three years after Compound Labs was founded. The protocol had already opened to the public on September 27, 2018, and distribution used a usage-based "liquidity mining" airdrop to lenders and borrowers rather than a public sale, with on-chain community governance live around June 2020.
Compound Labs had raised $8.2 million in a May 2018 seed round led by Bain Capital Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Polychain Capital, and Paradigm prior to the token's launch.
Compound's governance token, COMP, is issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum mainnet.
Bridged or deployed representations of COMP also exist on Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, BNB Smart Chain, Base, Harmony, and Energi, but the canonical, native asset is the Ethereum mainnet contract.
Compound Labs was founded in 2017 by Robert Leshner and Geoffrey Hayes, with the goal of building functioning money markets for blockchain assets. Leshner had previously built two software companies and worked at Postmates; he stepped down as CEO of Compound Labs in 2023 to found Superstate.
Pre-launch backers included Bain Capital Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Polychain Capital, and Paradigm. As of August 2026, Compound Foundation leadership includes Aaron Schnarch (Executive Director), Christopher Donovan (COO), Steven Liu (Chief Product Officer), and Leo Eikelman (CTO).
Compound is maintained by two entities: Compound Labs, Inc., the original for-profit developer, and the Compound Foundation, a non-profit established later via governance proposal. The Foundation was funded with roughly $9 million in COMP to cover its operations for an initial 18 months, and now runs day-to-day protocol growth and business-development activity, including the August 2026 institutional-pivot initiative.
COMP holders govern Compound entirely on-chain through Compound Governance, live since around June 2020; Compound was among the first DeFi protocols to hand full protocol control to token-holder voting. Any approved parameter or contract change is subject to a mandatory 7-day timelock before execution.
The August 2026 institutional-pivot budget of $52 million was itself approved via a DAO governance proposal, split into $28 million for operations and $24 million for growth, with $14 million released immediately and $38 million gated behind delivery milestones.
On August 17, 2026, the Compound Foundation announced a DAO-approved $52 million budget, spanning roughly two years, to pivot toward institutional and real-world-asset (RWA) credit infrastructure. The plan positions Compound to compete with products such as Aave's Horizon and Morpho.
The initiative pairs $14 million in immediately available funding with $38 million released against delivery milestones, under new Compound Foundation leadership appointed the same month.
Compound's contracts have been audited multiple times by Trail of Bits and OpenZeppelin since 2019, covering the Timelock/Pause Guardian, cDAI, Governance, and Compound III components. Compound also maintains an active Immunefi bug bounty (Standard Badge), paying up to 10% of affected funds, capped at $1,000,000, for critical bugs.
On September 30, 2021, a single-character logic bug in a governance proposal caused Compound's Comptroller contract to over-distribute roughly 280,000 COMP (about $90 million at the time); a 7-day timelock prevented an immediate fix. The top 10 holders control 46% of supply, and on-chain DEX liquidity relative to market cap is thin.
