PancakeSwap Token (PancakeSwap) (CAKE) is the native token of PancakeSwap, a decentralized exchange (DEX) and DeFi protocol operating on BNB Chain (BEP-20). It is also bridged to Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, zkSync, Polygon zkEVM, Linea, opBNB and Solana, with BNB Chain holding the canonical contract and roughly 96.8% of the protocol's total value locked.
PancakeSwap functions as an automated market maker offering token swaps, liquidity pools, yield farming, a lottery, NFT marketplace features, and a perpetuals trading platform. CAKE serves as the protocol's governance and utility token across these products.
PancakeSwap differentiates itself among decentralized exchanges through large scale and multi-chain reach, with total value locked in the low-to-mid single-digit billions of dollars as of 2026-08-31. BNB Chain holds approximately 96.8% of that TVL, and PancakeSwap ranks among the largest DEXs by trading volume.
Its buy-back-and-burn mechanism ties CAKE's supply directly to protocol usage, making the token deflationary rather than a passive governance placeholder. CAKE captures this activity through staking, farming rewards, and lottery and prediction-market products across supported chains.
CAKE is both a governance and utility token. Holders use it to vote on protocol proposals under the 1-CAKE-1-vote model introduced with Tokenomics 3.0.
Beyond governance, CAKE is used for yield farming and liquidity provision rewards, staking in syrup pools, purchasing tickets for the PancakeSwap Lottery, participating in Initial Farm Offerings (IFOs) for third-party token launches, NFT marketplace activity, and prediction markets. A portion of platform usage fees is routed to CAKE buy-back-and-burn.
CAKE's maximum supply is hard-capped at 400 million tokens, cut from 450 million via a Snapshot governance vote held 2026-01-16 to 2026-01-19.
Net emission is deflationary: a buy-back-and-burn mechanism targets at least 4% annual supply reduction, aiming for a roughly 20% total supply cut by 2030, with current on-chain supply growth slightly negative.
PancakeSwap launched in September 2020 on Binance Smart Chain (now BNB Chain), initially built as a fork of Uniswap's automated market maker model adapted for BNB Chain's lower transaction fees.
CAKE was not distributed through a public ICO or venture-capital funding round; early distribution occurred through token emissions and yield-farming allocations instead. PancakeSwap later introduced Initial Farm Offerings (IFOs), a launch mechanism offered to third-party projects on its platform, separate from CAKE's own original distribution.
CAKE is deployed on BNB Chain (BEP-20), which holds the canonical, primary contract and roughly 96.8% of PancakeSwap's protocol total value locked. Additional or bridged deployments exist on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, zkSync, Polygon zkEVM, Linea, opBNB and Solana.
PancakeSwap does not operate its own blockchain or validator set. It is a protocol built on top of these existing networks, so transaction processing and finality depend on each host chain's own consensus mechanism rather than one run by PancakeSwap itself.
PancakeSwap was launched and continues to be developed by an anonymous, pseudonymous team operating under kitchen-themed identities known as "Chefs" rather than named founders.
Reported co-leads use the pseudonyms "Hops" and "Thumper," alongside additional pseudonymous chefs and engineers contributing to development.
PancakeSwap operates as a DAO-adjacent, pseudonymously-run protocol rather than under a named corporate entity or company brand.
Development and community engagement continue through official channels, including the website pancakeswap.finance, its GitHub repository (github.com/pancakeswap), Discord, Telegram, Reddit, and X/Twitter (@pancakeswap).
PancakeSwap is governed through on-chain voting. Since CAKE Tokenomics 3.0 began rolling out on 2025-04-23, governance follows a 1-CAKE-1-vote model, replacing the earlier veCAKE vote-escrow and Gauges Voting system that had let long-term stakers direct emissions across pools and chains; token delegation is no longer permitted.
The veCAKE removal was contested by Cakepie DAO, reportedly the largest veCAKE holder, prompting a proposed $1.5 million CAKE compensation offer. A follow-on Snapshot governance vote ran 2026-01-16 to 2026-01-19 and passed further changes to the token's supply parameters.
A Snapshot governance vote (2026-01-16 to 2026-01-19) reduced CAKE's maximum supply, continuing the CAKE Tokenomics 3.0 overhaul that began rolling out on 2025-04-23.
PancakeSwap has also launched a rebuilt Perpetuals trading platform and introduced "Chef AI," an automated support assistant, as recent product developments. The project's buy-back-and-burn program reportedly burned about 8.19% of total supply during 2025.
PancakeSwap has undergone multiple audits from firms including PeckShield, SlowMist, BlockSec, Cyfrin, HashDit, OtterSec, Zellic, Halborn, Burrasec, and Pashov. These audits cover components ranging from MasterChef farming contracts to the CAKE token contract itself. It also runs an Immunefi bug bounty program with a maximum payout of $1,000,000 for critical vulnerabilities.
In 2026, several third-party liquidity pools trading on PancakeSwap's permissionless DEX were exploited, including an OLPC/LABUBU pool (~$1.1 million) and an AIDC burn-logic bug (~$121,100); PancakeSwap's own core AMM and CAKE contracts were not reported compromised in these incidents.
