Aave (AAVE) is the governance token of Aave, a decentralized, non-custodial liquidity protocol whose canonical deployment is on Ethereum. The same governance token also exists as official protocol-deployed instances on Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Solana, Fantom, Harmony, Huobi ECO Chain, and Energi, rather than as counterfeit clones. The protocol lets users algorithmically supply and borrow crypto assets, and it launched on Ethereum in January 2020, evolving from the 2017 project ETHLend, founded by Stani Kulechov. As of 2026-08-30, protocol total value locked was approximately $29.7 billion.
Aave differentiates itself through product breadth beyond simple lending, extending into stablecoin issuance and institutional asset markets.
The protocol operates GHO, its own native decentralized stablecoin, and Horizon, an institutional real-world-asset lending platform with roughly $550 million in net deposits targeting $1 billion-plus by 2027. Over the trailing 30 days, the protocol generated $32.8 million in total fees, retaining $4.79 million as protocol revenue. Under the DAO's "Aave Will Win" framework, this revenue is directed to accrue to the AAVE token rather than dispersing to third parties.
AAVE is primarily a governance token, giving holders on-chain voting power over the Aave DAO's protocol parameters, treasury, and product strategy through Aave Governance at app.aave.com/governance.
Holders can stake AAVE to receive stkAAVE, participating in the protocol's Safety Module and earning rewards funded by the DAO's Ecosystem Reserve. Both staked and unstaked AAVE carry voting weight on governance proposals.
AAVE has a fixed hard cap of 16,000,000 tokens, with circulating supply of approximately 15.42 million as of 2026-08-31.
Aave's token originated from a predecessor ICO: in 2017, ETHLend raised $16.2 million through a public sale of LEND tokens.
When the protocol rebranded to Aave in 2020, LEND holders migrated to the new AAVE token at a 100:1 ratio. The Aave Protocol itself launched on Ethereum in January 2020, several years after ETHLend's 2017 founding and ICO.
AAVE's canonical deployment is on Ethereum. The same governance token also exists as official, protocol-deployed instances on Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Solana, Fantom, Harmony, Huobi ECO Chain, and Energi, cross-chain deployments of the same asset rather than counterfeit clones, each secured by its own host chain's consensus mechanism.
Aave was founded by Stani Kulechov, a Finnish lawyer born in Estonia who studied law at the University of Helsinki.
Kulechov founded ETHLend in 2017, one of the earliest DeFi applications, which rebranded to Aave ahead of the protocol's January 2020 Ethereum launch. He currently serves as Founder and CEO of Aave Labs, the company that builds the protocol.
Aave Labs, formerly Aave Companies, is the primary development company building the Aave protocol, while the protocol's rules, treasury, and revenue rights are governed by the decentralized Aave DAO.
In April 2026, under the "Aave Will Win" governance framework, the Aave DAO approved a $25 million stablecoin grant plus 75,000 AAVE to Aave Labs to fund a multi-year product-development and growth strategy.
Aave is governed on-chain by AAVE and stkAAVE holders voting through Aave Governance at app.aave.com/governance.
Aave V4 is targeted for 2026 mainnet launch after clearing testnet in 2025 and passing a unanimous DAO vote in March 2026.
Aave has undergone multiple independent security audits, including OpenZeppelin, Trail of Bits, Certora, PeckShield, CertiK, Consensys Diligence, and SigmaPrime, with V3 audits dated November 2021-January 2022. Third-party scores include a CertiK audit score of 92.83 and DeFi Safety scores of 94-96%, and Aave runs a bug bounty program via Immunefi.
In April 2026, a LayerZero verification failure in Kelp DAO's rsETH, unrelated to Aave's own code, created roughly $177-200 million in bad debt in Aave's wETH pool, forcing a freeze of rsETH markets. The top 10 holder addresses controlled 43% of AAVE supply as of 2026-08-31.
